There is no concrete proof that cell phone radiations cause cancer or brain tumor, but the paranoia is neither totally baseless nor unnecessary. Certain electromagnetic waves emitted by these devices enter our bodies without our knowledge, making them all the more dangerous. Therefore, keeping this in mind, the possible hazards of cell phones are very much real, though the true extent is yet to be gouged.

Mere minutes of exposure to this electromagnetic radiation has been proved to destroy vital DNA structures in the cell leading to cellular degeneration. According to scientists, this can lead to Alzheimer’s as well as Parkinson’s disease. In addition to this, in rare cases cell phones can also interfere with heart devices like pacemakers and lead to cardiac arrest though it is very rare. These radiations are also known to cause permanent damage to the surrounding environment, and some of them have even been attributed to causing fires at Gas stations.

Cancer:

Recently, a study was conducted that involved mice being subjected to electromagnetic waves similar to those emitted by cell phone devices. These microwaves caused a destruction of their DNA and genetic material. Mice tested with this radiation showed a much higher risk of developing cancer after prolonged exposure to cell phone radiation.

Blood Pressure:

People who use cell phones on a daily basis for long periods of time were known to suffer from high blood pressure. Studies have shown a direct link between cell phone usage and hypertension. People using cellphones for more than 3 hours a day were found to suffer from a significantly higher risk of developing high blood pressure than people who did not always have a cell phone with them. Cutting down from 3 hours to 1 hour showed a sharp drop in hypertension risk over a period of time.

Pregnancy:

According to a study conducted on chick embryos, it has been found that these radiations can have adverse effects on pregnant mothers. Incidence of miscarriage were higher complications during childbirth were 50% more than normal. Apart from this, radiation has also been linked to brain retardation and other forms of mental disorders.

General health problems:

People who spend a considerable part of their day on their cell phones have been known to complain of frequent headaches, skin irritation problems as well as chronic fatigue.

Memory:

This electromagnetic radiation is known to affect the memory of frequent mobile phone users. The radiation has been known to alter certain brain cells concerned with memory retention. A very real risk of developing Alzheimer’s has been linked to cell phone usage.

Bad Posture:

More often than not, people hold their cell phones between their ear and shoulder. Holding this posture for long periods of time can cause serious damage to related muscles as well as ligaments. The leading cause of spondylitis presently is incorrect posture while using cell phones.

Infertility amongst men:

Continuous use of these devices and the consequent radiations emitted by them have been known to cause infertility amongst men, causing them to have a lower sperm count and motility.

How to avoid these health hazards:

Keeping in mind the above mentioned health hazards, it is necessary to keep a few tips in mind in order to avoid them:

1- One must keep in mind to use cell phones only when they are absolutely needed, that is, only when you have no other option. Use a landline instead!
2- A chip is now available in the market, which when attached to ones cell phone, has the ability to absorb harmful electromagnetic radiation.
3- Making use of hands free devices on a regular basis is recommended as one does not hold the mobile phone close to the head this way.
4- Mobiles phones have known to cause a number of accidents on the roads. While people drive and talk on their cell phones, they tend to concentrate more on their conversation and less on the road. Therefore, one should use a hands free as far as possible while driving as this helps to avoid such accidents.
